The Mersey Band will play host to the Salvation Army Fairview Citadel
Band of Halifax, on Friday, May 13 at 7:30 pm. at Zion United Church, Main Street in Liverpool. The concert theme “Golden
Brass and other shiny things” was chosen to acknowledge the significance of brass instruments in both bands and
the repertoire for the evening reflects that.
This musical event will feature over 50 amateur and professional-level musicians.
The eclectic program includes a Canadian Brass arrangement of the ever-popular hymn Amazing Grace, themes from
the James Bond movie series, excerpts from The Lord of The Rings Symphony No. 1, and a Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite for
Military Bands. There will also be crisp marches, classical numbers and Klezmer
music. The bands will perform individually as well as a combined group.
The Salvation Army Brass band comprised of 22 highly committed and motivated
members use their musical gifts for a spiritual purpose. “ We are a volunteer group that come from very diverse
backgrounds, but are united through our love of music and love for God,” said
Musical Director Keith Haggett.
The Mersey Band, with over 35 members, is now in its 63rd year of playing at
South Shore parades, concerts, and community events. Members range in age from 12- 79. The band operates a week long summer camp for youth and adults as well as a year -long training program. The band currently has 11 junior members and 3 more in the training program.
Scott A. Mac Donald, Mersey Band

The May 13 concert is part one of a band exchange. The Mersey Band is to join
the Salvation Army Band in concert at Fairview Citadel Church, 50 Gesner Street, Halifax on Sunday May 15 at 3 p.m.
